Jaan Sepping is the founder and CEO of Ecobase, Europe’s leading forest carbon project developer. He founded the company in 2021 after a career in investment banking, aiming to make carbon markets more accessible and effective for European landowners.
While supporting a forestry investment project, he uncovered a surprising gap: Europe, despite being a major and growing carbon market, had no certified forestry carbon projects at the time, and no large project developers exploring how to make them work. Existing global models didn’t suit European conditions, where land ownership is scattered and operations are more costly.
Ecobase was built to close that gap. It develops both Improved Forest Management (IFM) and Afforestation/Reforestation (ARR) projects tailored to these realities. In 2024, Ecobase became the first developer in Europe to register an ARR project under Verra, spanning 24 countries, and has already issued and sold verified carbon credits. Today, the company delivers forest-based climate solutions rooted in credibility, scale, and long-term trust.
